So what's the big deal?

Ok so someone has to finally touch on the John Edwards affiar…

Over the last couple of days the media have been opining on what a disaster it would have been if John Edwards were nominated given his recent affair.

Why?  The Republican candidate is an admitted adulterer and divorcee.  After a car accident left his first wife (a former model) crippled, he left her to marry Cindy, 17 years his junior with whom he had carried on an extended and (under the Uniform Code of Military Justice) illegal affair.  I almost wish Edwards had been nominated.  I’d love to make this election about sexual ethics, whether the Democratic nominee was Edwards, Bill Clinton or Hugh Hefner.

Throwdown at the convention

Our friends at NYMagazine and Lawrence O’Donnell Jr, a writer/producer for JWStraz’s favorite show (The West Wing, duh), have come together to bring us the glorious screenplay: Four Days in Denver.

The Democratic Party is closer than it’s ever been to a political nightmare—a deadlocked convention. Though the odds of its actually happening are still remote, the idea is so rich with dramatic possibility that we asked Lawrence O’Donnell Jr., former West Wing writer-producer, to play out a scenario in movie-treatment form. The premise is that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton arrive in Denver, neither having sufficient delegates to gain the nomination nor a decisive majority in the popular vote. And so it’s on…

A sampling of the drama:

CUT TO:
Obama suite. Dean and the leadership are meeting with Barack and Michelle Obama.

Barack: But I have the lead in delegates, the lead in—
Reid: We know. We just think a unity ticket is the only way we can—
Michelle: Why should the guy in the lead take the VP slot?
Reid: We—
Barack: Because you already asked Hillary to take VP and she said no?

Dean: We haven’t exactly asked her that yet, but if we could tell her you’re ready to accept the vice-presidential nomination …
Barack: No.
Reid: Barack, if this goes to a second ballot, all hell could break loose.
Barack: No.
Dean (pointing to Gore on Larry King): You know Gore’s gonna make a move if we get to a second ballot. You really think you can hang on to all your delegates then?
Barack shoots a worried look at Gore on TV.

Obama Wins Mississippi, Extends Delegate Lead | Travis Radina

Moments ago, MSNBC declared Barack Obama the winner of the Mississippi primary and suggested that he will likely net at least 7 delegates, which would completely eliminate Clinton’s March 4th delegate gains (with the help of Wyoming).

YouTube Democracy | NECS

Here is my collection of the 10(8) best Political YouTube Videos…. Most of them are from Campaign 08, but a few are older.

If you would like to add more videos please post links in the discussion/comment area!

1) Unfortunately, this video of John Edwards, although old, proved to be a critical tool in the definition of John Edwards for President. With videos like this plus stories of $400 haircuts his populist message never took off the ground.

2) Early on in the the campaign Hillary developed a southern accent… indulge in the beauty of the accent.

How Green Is Your Candidate? (just the top 3 Democrats)

Here is my disclaimer: *This is stolen from Newsweek, but I thought you (especially Sarah Duffy) might be interested. I also excluded the three Republicans, so if you are interested…I recommend that you check out the article in the April 16, 2007 issue of Newsweek*
I am also adding to the “What He’ll Do” section for John Edwards, because I know what his plans are. If you know what Obama or Hillary (or the Republicans for that matter) plan to do, please add on to them in the comments section!

How Green Is Your Candidate?

Hillary Clinton

What She’s Done: Member of Environmental Committee. Voted for 2003 bill and Co-Sponsored 2007 bill that would cap greenhouse gas emmissions.

What She’ll Do: Proposed eliminating tax breaks for oil companies. Would use that extra cash to invest in alternative energy. Also proposed quadrupling the existing tax break for hybrid-car owners. I was unable to find an “issues” section on Hillary’s website, but please visit www.HillaryClinton.com if you would like to search for yourself.
How Green Is She?:The Clintons are redoing their entire home for maximum energy efficiency. They hired consultants to come up with greener lighting, heating and power-generation solutions.

Barack Obama

What He’s Done: Co-sponsored McCain’s greenhouse gas bill. Introduced a bill giving tax breaks to gas stations selling alternative fuels. Advocated an increase in fuel-economy standards.

What He’ll Do: “Talks Up” clean-coal technology. Promises to increase research funding for alternative-energy sources and push for a plan to require the government to use either flex-fuel or hybrid vehicles. For more detailed information on Barack Obama’s plan, please visit his website at www.BarackObama.com
How Green Is He?: Obama’s campaign leases a flex-fuel GMC Yukon, but admits that it is hard to find ethanol in Chicago.

John Edwards

What He’s Done: Criticized efforts to roll back the Clean Air Act. Consistently opposed drilling in ANWR. Supported legislation that would have reduced power-plan emissions.

What He’ll Do: Create 1 million jobs by investing in a “new-energy economy.” Called for a climate treaty that would ask all nations to reduce pollution. Edwards will “make polluters pay” and using the projected 10-13 billion dollars that would be raised, will double the Department of Energy’s budget for alternative and renewable energy. He will also use 1 billion dollars of that money to help automakers update to energy saving technology. He will create a GreenCorps within AmeriCorps to increase energy savings and awareness on a community level. Edwards also plans to reduce the U.S. Governments energy use by 20 percent and make the White House carbon neutral. Edwards has a multi-page energy platform on his website, www.JohnEdwards.com
How Green Is He?: His new house uses solar panels to heat water. He traded in his SUV for a hybrid Ford Escape. He has pledged to run a carbon neutral campaign.
