Batter Up by Rebecca Egler

There once was a meal we all tend to skip,
But alas, tomorrow, sweet syrup you’ll sip
So make your way all downtown
And wear a Dingellized crown
For the College Dems Pancake Breakfast will sure be a trip.

Dingell Shindig

Today, a few members of the college democrats attended a gathering held by Congressman Dingell and Debbie Dingell. The event was held at the Ypsilanti Automotive History Museum. Most of the area’s elected officials were in attendance. We discussed our (College Democrats) plans for the upcoming fall semester as well as various other topics.

The location was pretty cool, for this blogger, but I am afraid most of the “cool factor” of old classic cars didn’t translate to others. Seemed like the perfect place for a bunch of elected officials and their supporters from Southeast Michigan to congregate. As I looked at some of the relics of Detroit’s automotive past, it was a reminder of how the auto industry once thrived. There were many examples of the car Ralph Nader declared to be “unsafe at any speed” (Chevrolet Corvair), as well as little known vehicles such as Kaisers and Tuckers. All in all it was a pleasant way to spend a summer evening.

Chevrolet Corvair circa 1962

Happy Dana? I blogged.

Also, on a completely unrelated topic…

On the way to the shindig, a car burst into flames on Washtenaw Ave. That car was not, however a Corvair. Click on the pictures to enlarge.

Kwame, the Red Wings, and Obama

Friday, in Detroit’s Hart Plaza, scandal ridden mayor Kwame Kilpatrick took the stage at the Red Wings victory parade to trumpet Detroit’s hometown heroes. The result?

The volume and decibel level of the booing were so deafening, you would have thought Matt Millen just stepped on stage.

The man got booed by his constituents. In a moment of celebration this one man brought an angry and unhappy mood to to the atmosphere of celebration surrounding Detroit’s win. Kilpatrick’s toxicity is so strong it was able to reach into areas thought immune to politics, like the Stanley Cup. He should have stayed away from the parade and all the happy Detroiters who were able to put aside their hardships and corrupt leader for a day.

Which leads me to this bit of news

Sen. Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee for the U.S. presidency, will visit Detroit on June 16, his first appearance south of 8 Mile since last summer.

“The campaign will host a public event and fund-raiser,” campaign spokeswoman Candice Tolliver said Sunday. “We were just in metro Detroit, obviously, but he’s glad to be coming back.”

The article further explores whether Kilpatrick will be invited to any of the functions on the 16th. One part of this article troubled me… a variety of different groups with tickets could invite him without the campaign’s consent. No one, in the article, was really clear about where Kilpatrick will be on the 16th.

Advice – Keep that man away from Obama… schedule some committee hearing in DC where Kwame has to testify about the Red Wings or proper telecommunications etiquette (that can be bundled with telecom immunity right?). If the toxicity of Kwame can infect a rally for the Stanley Cup, then that man will be able to sap the energy out of an Obama event. For a campaign based around hope, the future, and a new America, which Kwame, to many Michiganders, represents the exact opposite.

Kwame Kilpatrick could lose Michigan for Obama if the Republicans are able to crank their high-powered smear machine into high gear using a lovely photo of the two. Keep him away and keep him quiet.

The Bitch is Back | Elton John & Hillary Clinton

Tonight the Clinton campaign is holding a massive fundraiser featuring none other then Sir Elton John at the Radio City Music Hall. Originally, the event was only expected to draw about $1.5 million dollars to the Clinton campaign, but now over 6,000 people are expected attend with a net gain about $2.5 million dollars for the clinton war chest.

This is quite an essential amount considering Obama is now outspending Clinton at a 3 -1 margin in Pennsylvania – her last firewall going into the convention. This money is now crucial for the Clinton campaign, which has been reportedly in debt to many campaign suppliers, but also since the polls have started trending in Obama’s favor in PA.
