There are a couple of motifs that John McCain has been attempting to introduce into his campaign for president. On the personal level, he is a “maverick” who puts “country first” and party second. On issues, he would have us believe that the “War on Terror” and the supposedly related War in Iraq is the defining issue of this century for America and indeed all of Western civilization.
