Midnight Snack

So I’m procrastinating a paper revision when I stumble across this page of “Bush by the Numbers”. It breaks down the Bush presidency by looking at several key (and several esoteric) indicators. The research was done by ProPublica, “an independent, non-profit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest.” It looks like a pretty cool website, and I’ll check it out when I have some more free time.

Most of the statistics are pretty depressing; unemployment, the uninsured, and the national debt all increased. Some of the more obscure numbers are indicative of all the minor ways in which Bush has handicapped our institutions.

There Goes the Neighboorhood

Not the future Ex-President's house
Not the future Ex-President’s house.

After hibernating for the past two days, venturing out only for Spinach Artichoke dip, I made a blog round and stumbled across this interesting tidbit. Once vacating the White House (before fumigation) the Bushes plan to move to a swanky Dallas neighborhood, home to other wealthy and super-wealthy Texans. While some residents are eagerly awaiting the soon-to-be-ex-presidential family’s arrival, others fear the president’s low approval ratings, poor press coverage, and overall dickhead manner will bring an unsavory and potentially dangerous element to the neighborhood.

The neighborhood, Preston Hollow, has some interesting history as well. Well into the second millennium the neighborhood ‘covenant’ had the following language: (more…)

I don't think so

So I was doing the ol’ blog circuit and stumbled across this statement by RNC chair Mike Duncan. He wrote it after the run-off election in Georgia, where Republican Saxby Chambliss defeated Democratic challenger Jim Martin in the Senate race. Duncan asserts that the victory was a rejection of the “liberal mandate” and called such an idea “hot air”. He says the Chambliss won in spite of “strong support by President-elect Obama and Democratic organizations” and by doing so the Republicans have basically won the first election of 2010 cycle, defeated Barack Obama ex post facto, and shown everyone that liberalism is just a fad. To that I say… (more…)

Breaking News: Assclowns

So I’m sitting the fishbowl trying to write this paper when all of a sudden there is a banging on the glass wall. I look over and see a group of eight guys with huge grins pounding furiously on the panes. Without notice they all turn around, drop their pants, and proceed to rub their bare asses all over the windows. This proceeds for about ten seconds, during which the entire fishbowl is as quite as a crypt. As soon as the mischief makers scampered off into the night a communal chortle moved across the room, and I proceed to open up this page as fast as you can say Windex.

Update: There is now smoke coming from a corner of the fishbowl. But it’s cool, douchebags are investigating.

Update Two: The smell wafted over, it’s totally popcorn. Amateurs.

3 A.M. Snack

So I was doing some late nite bruising (blog cruising) and I stumbled across this video. I won’t read too much into this, but it seems that McCain might be reconciling himself to the fact that he’s about to receive an electoral beat down. Check out the ridiculous comments made by some of his scummy (spelling?) crowd members. The only thing better than how nuts they are is the look on the Maverick’s face when he snatches the microphone back from Gramma McRacist.

Early Edition Coverage

Sean Astin, circa a while ago.

Sean Astin, circa a while ago.

So the Daily’s finest Julie Rowe wrote an excellent article covering the recent developments between College Dems and University Housing.

She basically rehashes the events of the past weeks, focusing on our final push efforts in the residence halls on the eve before the registration deadline.

Interestingly, the Daily also ran an editorial saying the University was far too late in allowing us to finally have unfettered access to the residence halls. While the writing isn’t nearly as good as the Rowe piece their heart is in the right place.

*Additionally, Sean Astin spoke to a large gathering of ResHall Vote Captains in the Kuenzel room prior to our last big walk-thru. He was really well spoken and a great motivator, love me some Samwise. After the meeting Josh LeVasseur and I walked around with Sean and registered voters. You really get the sense that if he wasn’t an actor and volunteering for the campaign he’d be out here anyway. All around awesome guy.

Did They Use a Blue Pen?

I just stumbled across this article in the Washington Post about how the New York Times rejected an op-ed submitted by John McCain. McCain’s piece was a response to Obama’s article detailing the latter’s plan for withdrawal from Iraq. In an email to McCain staffers a New York Times editor conveyed this thought as summarized by The Washington Post:

“it would be terrific to have an article from McCain but that the one sent in was not acceptable as currently written and that a new draft should articulate how McCain defines victory in Iraq.”

That’s gotta hurt the old ego. Not only does someone need to edit what McCain says (see his latest geographical gaffe) but now the presidential candidate can’t even get his views in the leading US paper. I wonder what it was? Were his prose old and unimaginative? Did he suffer from a lack of novel ideas in the face of a changing geo-political landscape? Did he forget to double space? The answer isn’t yet clear, but we’ll certainly keep an eye out for his second draft. As long as it’s submitted by midnight and the margins aren’t more than an inch.

In related news I just noticed that Obama’s slogan is dangling a preposition. Looks like “change we can believe in” should be “change in which we can believe.” I won’t mark him off though, he got the jist of the assignment.

Miss Teen South Carolina for VP?

A recent CNN blurb seems to have caught another one of John McCain’s senior moments.

“And I regret some of the recent behavior Russia that has exhibited, and I’ll be glad to talk about that later on including reduction in oil supplies to Czechoslovakia after they agreed with us on a missile defense system, etcetera,”

Not surprisingly this quote comes from yet another speech by McCain in which he attempts to convince hapless townsfolk he’s the better candidate on foreign policy. To demonstrate his acumen the 71 year-old refers to Czechoslovakia, the name of a country that ceased to exist in 1993. Not only once, but twice did McCain confuse Czechoslovakia with the current states of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The first incident took place on Monday, and was followed by a corrective statement from the campaign, only to be repeated Tuesday at a town hall meeting (excerpt above). Sunni and Shia, Iran and al Qaeda, and now this. If the Senator doesn’t even know these basics how can he be expected to handle the infinitely more complex challenges he would encounter as commander-and-chief?

Warning: Satire

Originally, McCain had wanted to call it Greater Bohemia with Moravia and Czech Silesia, Dominions of her Excellency Empress Maria Theresa of the Hapsburgs, Holy Roman Empress, Queen of Hungary, Bohemia, Croatia and Slavonia, Archduchess of Austria, Duchess of Parma and Piacenza, Grand Duchess of Tuscany. After ranting about the danger posed by the Romanov Muscovites McCain switched to the dangers of encouraging Ottoman forays into the Crimea, the ominous return of this “Napoleon character,” and the potential benefits of encouraging the Dole corporation’s adventure in the Sandwich Islands.

George Bush Doesn't Care about You (or anyone)

Once again the Bush Administration has proved how much they don’t care. A Washington Post article (I first read it in Express) highlights the EPA’s past and recent actions that decreased the dollar value of a human life. The $6.9 million figure is used to determine whether or not the adoption of a regulation is worth the cost of that regulation. For instance, if a regulation that would force the government to clean up pollution would cost $7 million to implement, but only affect one person, the regulation would not be implemented. What these people don’t realize is that pollution affects everybody: current and future inhabitants across the globe.

It’s not suprising that the science hating jerks in Bush’s EPA are doing all they can to avoid taking action against polluters, but finding out that they are intentionally devaluing human life is something I, as a human, take personally. As much as these hypocrites claim to value life, and tout around abortion to russle up votes, nothing they have done shows they care an ounce a spit for human beings.

And it doesn’t end there! Another Washington Post article reports on the Administration’s refusal to act on greenhouse gas emissions before Bush leaves office. The article recounts the sickening actions, and eqaully sickening inactions, of the Bush Administration regarding emissions, fuel-standards, and the problem of global warming. I won’t recount word-for-word what the article states, but I encourage everyone to read it. If it doesn’t make your blood boil I guarantee it will make your stomach turn.

“If this administration spent the same effort fighting global warming as they do editing and censoring global warming documents, the planet might not be in such dire straits.” Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.)

I don’t envy Barack Obama, inheriting a world of problems (quite literally) from this Administration is more work than can be accomplished in eight years. And while I don’t envy him, I trust him to bring the kind of forward thinking compassionate goverance that we’ve lacked for far too long.

Yet Another Quote of the Day

News Flash: John McCain had another senior moment. Well he wasn’t confusing the two main sects of the world’s fastest growing religion, nor was he avoiding answering a question about Viagra. Nope.

John McCain instead was attacking Barack Obama for his position on the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, those Photoshop whizzes who recently launched numerous Shahab missiles in bit of muscle flexing. While implying that Obama was unwilling to take a tough stance against the Moe Howard of the now Party of One ‘Axis of Evil,’ McCain touted his own record on the issue, saying,

“This is the same organization that I voted to condemn as a terrorist organization when an amendment was on the floor of the United States Senate. Senator Obama refused to vote.”

Oh really? Looks like someone forgot where they were on September 26, 2007 as the Kyl-Lieberman amendment was under consideration. Senator McCain was actually in New York attending either a campaign stop or fundraising event, I don’t remember or know which. But I don’t need to remember where he was and what he did, that’s his job.
