Mark Chou's Take: Obama Talks Marijuana

markchoustake8alg_pres_obama

On Wednesday, President Obama hosted an online town hall, the first of its kind. People were asked to submit their questions for Obama online. They could then vote for the questions they would like to see Obama answer. An approved list of the questions receiving the most votes was submitted to the forum’s moderator who then relayed the questions to President Obama. Obama answered all of the moderator’s questions, but also decided to take a question that was popular among the online voters but did make the final list. The query: With over 1 out of 30 Americans controlled by the penal system, why not legalize, control, and tax marijuana to change the failed war on drugs into a money making, money saving boost to the economy? Do we really need that many victimless criminals? O.K. Thinking that legalizing drugs may lead to a boost in our economy may be a little far fetched. However, I’m disappointed Obama never addressed how he felt about legalizing marijuana in general, set aside for economic boosting reasons. While many assume that the only people that would enjoy the legalization of marijuana would be stoner college hippies, there are still plenty of Americans that would greatly appreciate the medical benefits. My friend’s mother has multiple sclerosis; smoking marijuana would actually alleviate a lot of her pain. I hope Obama takes a stance on this issue could lead to many Americans to a higher level in life. To watch Obama answer the pot question, click here.

Daily Daily for Today

Here is your Daily Daily for today:

1. Michigan Basketball beat Duke on Saturday. My god did we need this. After football season and basketball season last year, it wasn’t the best. The UCLA win was a start, but this was Duke. Also, if you look hard at that front page picture, you can see me and Scott in the middle of the court. I’m the one wearing maize.
2. Michigan’s endowment fell 20-30 percent with the recent crapping of itself that the market is still in the middle of. The bigger thing from this story is how damned large Harvard’s endowment is. They were/are the 10th biggest charity in America in amount received per year. I’m not normally one to make Communist arguments about seizing assets and sharing the wealth, but yeah, um, yeah.
3. Even though the state passed Prop 1 in November, patients who need medical marijuana will have to wait months until they can get permits to grow it. My god, it’s like legalizing something, while making the act of getting it illegal will cause complications that will hurt sick people. It’s almost like our current drug policies are dumb and unsustainable. (more…)
