In the past 5 years, the State of Michigan has been the worst state in
the country in terms of higher education funding.  This summer, instead
of making good on its promise to give $180 million to public
universities around the state, the Michigan Legislature deferred its
payment until its next budget vote on October 1, 2007.  That day is
quickly approaching and the University of Michigan has a $30 million
check coming--except that it might not ever make it.  If we don't
receive our money, then it is likely that there will be a mid-year
tuition increase that could be as much as $1000.  The reason that
students keep getting a raw deal is because we don't generate enough
noise-- politicians have said that it is easy to put higher education
on the backburner because there is hardly any political fallout.  This
Wednesday, let's prove them wrong.

Student from every public university in the state will be gathering on
the Capitol lawn in Lansing to give our government the political
fallout they've had the luxury of avoiding.  And the University of
Michigan is leading the way by sending 300 Wolverines.  We are going to
Maize Out on the Capitol lawn.  But we need your help to make this
happen.  We've already had a huge tuition hike once this year--we can't
let it happen again.  Take 6 hours out of your day, get on the bus with
us, and help put a stop to these exorbitant tuition increases.

FunDems will kick the year off this Wednesday at 8 PM in the Tap Room of the Michigan Union. Our first meeting will be short but important. We will be talking about the mass meeting and brainstorming about what we are going to do this year.

A New Year

Hello All-

Last year FunDems did some amazing work. The money we raise allows the College Democrats to make a difference! All of our success would not have been possible were it not for our dedicated members.

A new year is upon us and its time to get crack-a-lackin'. All the money we raise this year will be vital to our success in '08! So, if you want to help the dems raise money with awsome events, then FunDems is for you!

Our first meeting will be on Wednesday, September 12th, at 8pm in the Tap Room. We'll be discussing what we will have at our committee table for the mass meeting the following Saturday (schemes for attracting impressionable freshman to our KickAss committee).

In the past we have held many successful fundraising events involving students, elected officials and community members. Last year, we organized:

-Bar Night
-Pancake Breakfast with Congressman John Dingell

We’re also responsible for the Dems line of merchandise.

We hold our meetings weekly on Tuesdays at 8pm in the Tap Room of the Michigan Union.
