No Sulfide Mining in the UP!!
The Michigan Department of Environmental Qualityis currently considering issuing a permit for a mine just off the shore of Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula. The mine could cause leaching of highly acidic sulfuric runoff into two nearby rivers and the surrounding public wild lands. The project would last less than ten years and provide at most 100 jobs, yet possibly damage the important outdoor tourism industry of the area.
EnviroDems is joining the rest of the state in voicing our opposition to this development by asking students to sign postcards addressed to the DEQ insisting the permit be denied.
