Live Blog of the State of the Union
8:57- Wow Bush is unpopular. Chris Matthews is talking about the primary and not President Bush’s coming speech. 8:57- Keith Olberman is reading excerpts of the speech before it starts. What a buzzkill. 8:59- Oh God, Chris Matthews is talking about Condoleeza Rice becoming the VP of the Republican candidate. 9:02- Michael Chertoff is an ugly man. 9:07- Alright, the speech is about to start. Hopefully they don’t show Nancy Pelosi furiously blinking. 9:10- Harry Reid looks so creepy at this camera angle. 9:11- Good, Bush is starting off right. Bipartisanship is good to talk about. 9:13- Very sly transition into earmarks, Mr. President. You didn’t say it directly, but that’s what you mean by “loaded bills.” 9:14- Tax relief will not eliminate uncertainty! Do you really think that will solve the problems of the economy? 9:15- Veto any tax increase? I guess you don’t plan on funding anything. 9:16- Tough man Bush talking about vetoing. I guess that’s what happens when you lose all other form of influence. 9:18- He’s going to say “empower” a lot in this speech. 9:19- Barack Obama has an excellent stone-face in response to Bush criticizing universal health care (and nationalized health care). 9:20- Bush said “empower” again. Somebody needs to keep track of how many times he says that word. 9:21- Oh no, Bush is praising No Child Left Behind. 9:22- Bush says “empower” again. 9:23- Bush is talking about passing trade agreements. This is pretty good. He’s not coming off that bad right now. 9:24- Bush is talking about trade adjustment assistance. This is good. He’s trying to sound like a Democrat. 9:26- Always good to talk alternative energy. I wonder if he really knows why nuclear power is a flawed source though. 9:27- Hillary Clinton looks really bored. 9:29- Bush is talking adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells. I wonder if he knows what they are. 9:30- Alright, another word to count is “trust.” He’s saying that a lot too. 9:30- “Trust” and “empower” in the same sentence. Impressive! 9:31- Did Bush really just say, “armies of compassion?” 9:32- Nancy Pelosi looks really bored. Somebody needs to give her some botox. 9:34- Bush getting emotional on illegal immigration. This is one of the few areas where I like his policies. 9:35- Bush is using big words like “hemorrhage.” Somebody must have told him what it meant. 9:38- It would be nice if Bush talked more about Afghanistan and less about Iraq. He sounds decent talking about Afghanistan. 9:41- Bush gets everyone on their feet by talking about the troops. 9:42- Joe Biden is in a state of intense concentration. 9:43- Bush says Al Qaeda will be defeated. Is it possible to truly eliminate terrorists? I think not. 9:45- Bush slides in a request to fully fund the troops. 9:47- Troops coming home is good to talk about. People like hearing that. 9:51- Bush talks peace between Israel and Palestine. Easier said than done, but it’s a nice thought. 9:52- Stop beating the drums of war Bush! Iran is no threat to us! 9:52- Is Bush listening when Iran says they are enriching uranium for energy purposes only? 9:55- Bush wants wiretapping authorization extended. Congress, don’t reauthorize it! 9:56- Genocide in Sudan is condemned. That’s good. Let’s see some action. 9:58- Bush is talking about funding veterans programs. That’s something everyone can get behind. 10:02- Bush finishes his speech after about 53 minutes. This speech was filled with old clichés and old sayings from him.
